17-year-old charged in murder of man found in Alexandria park

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Police arrested a 17-year-old  and took two people into custody in connection with the homicide of a 24-year-old man who was found dead in Beverley Park in November 2015.

The 17-year-old male was charged with murder on Wednesday, Alexandria police said. Two other suspects, a 16-year-old girl and adult male, were taken into custody in connection with the homicide of Jose Luis Ferman Perez. Perez was found dead in the park at the intersection of N. Overlook Drive and S. Overlook Drive on November 9, 2015.

All three people arrested are believed to be members of the MS13 gang.

The charges in Perez's death came on the same day police announced an arrest in another murder of an Alexandria man. Edwin Umana, the accused in that murder, is also believed to be a member of MS13.

"The intensity of the violence has risen a great deal in the last couple of years. We, unfortunately, had two victims die here in Alexandria because of that violence, but it's a regional issue," Alexandria police chief Earl Cook said.
