1500 Tons of Salt Ready for Winter Season in Manassas City

Winter months are just around the corner and road travel can be a concern for many during below- freezing temperatures. The City of Manassas Utilities and Public Works Department annually budgets $250,000 for snow treatment and removal, and is prepared with 16 snow-removal trucks, 22 contract equipment, 1500 tons of road salt and almost 500 tons of sand. “Ice and snow can prevent mobility and cause a lot of traffic issues, which is why we proactively invest in snow preparedness and manpower” said Mike Moon, director of public works and utilities for the City of Manassas. “Last year we had a mild winter, but our reserve of salt and sand is well-stocked in the case of extreme weather conditions, and our crews are trained and committed to the task of keeping the roads clear of snow and ice, as well as safe for our residents,” said Moon.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is traveling across the state provide convienent service.

DMV 2 Go, has five mobile units that will provide full service for all DMV transcations while on the go.

National Plug In Day is Sept 23 in Manassas

Northern Virginia’s National Plug In Day event will be Sunday, September 23 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at The Manassas Museum, 9101 Prince William Street, Manassas, Virginia.  The event will give you the chance to learn more about electric vehicles (EV) via interaction with private owners and local EV dealers, as well as through vehicle test drives. The event will feature EVs from Sheehy Nissan (Leaf), Malloy Mitsubishi (i-MiEV), and Miller Toyota (Plug In Prius). 

Who Should Attend

EV Owners: Come mingle and swap stories with other owners.

Prospective EV Buyers: Learn more about EVs through interaction with owners and dealers and stick around for a test drive.

Curiosity Seekers: See what all the buzz is about and find out why people are switching to electric.

THE HARD TRUTH

 While night after night at the RNC speakers extol the hegemony of  America's exceptionalism, Isaac came ashore in the Gulf, exposing the easy destructibility of our Third World infrastructure, laughing all the way. Just because Tampa missed being the epicenter of this storm does not mean "the hard truth" can be continued to be ignored.

    For those looking to take up residence in our national seat of power, I have one word - Derecho. Rest assured that the third time in 2012 a catastrophe strikes won't be the charm. It's time for capital improvements.

Early one Friday morning in June, Donnie the Pekin duck was preparing to fly south—via US Airways. Tucked inside a soft-sided pet carrier, we made our way through the airport, keeping our fingers crossed that Donnie would make it through check-in and security without any trouble. We had called the airline ahead of time to confirm that Donnie would be allowed in the cabin, but knowing that ducks probably aren’t an everyday sight for travelers and airline staff, we proceeded with caution.

MANASSAS BEGINS WATER and ELECTRIC LINE REPLACEMENT WORK

The City of Manassas Department of Public Works and Utilities is replacing water lines and electric lines now through Oct. 31 in parts of Manassas. Crews will work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize traffic disruptions. The construction, along Center Street from East Street to Zebedee Street, will cause night closures only, while two-lane traffic is maintained during the day. Message boards display the construction information and businesses along the work route have been notified by door hangers. For details, go to www.manassascity.org or call 703-257-8266.

Manassas Regional Airport Receives Multi-Million Dollar Grant from Federal Aviation Administration

Largest VA Regional Airport Receives Multi-Million Dollar Grant from Federal Aviation Administration

On July 1, 2012, Manassas Regional Airport, Virginia’s largest regional airport, will begin construction to extend their longest runway by an extra 500 feet. The airport received a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant for $3,974,723 and $353,309 from a Virginia Department of Aviation grant to lengthen their existing runway to 6200 feet. The extension will permit aircraft owners more runway to stop in inclement weather, allow aircraft to take more fuel for coast-to-coast flights and reduce noise levels to the north of the airport.
