New Walmart Brings Jobs and Fresh Produce

While this is not the first Walmart to appear in Alexandria, VA, it is the first of its kind in Virginia. This new "green" Walmart, which opened last Wednesday, offers a full line of groceries including an expansive produce section. The new store is located at 6303 Richmond Highway, in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

Not only did this new Walmart employ over 200 local community members, it will also use as much locally grown produce as possible to help sustain the local economy.

Direct competitor Target brought in fresh produce last month, according to Gwendolyn Smith of Washington D.C. She believes they were probably forced to renovate due to its proximitiy to this new Walmart. She will, however, shop at Walmart for the better prices.

Alexandria, VA – Local knitting shop fibre space has been named the 2010 Business of the Year by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce for its achievements over the past year.  The shop, which was also nominated for Best Small Business of the Year, opened in 2009 and has already surpassed the expectations of owner Danielle Romanetti.

“Some people thought I was crazy to start fibre space in this economy,” Romanetti said.  “This award proves that when you pour your heart into it – and when there’s a real desire in the community for something, like this store – you can be successful.”
