A Celebration of Mental Health through Art Tonight

A Celebration of Mental Health through Art Tonight

Mental Health Anti-Stigma HOPE Campaign’s 2011 Art Exhibition is opening tonight in Alexandria. The event, Art Uniting People: A Celebration of Creativity and Mental Health, will be held at the Lee Center tonight from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

This month is National Mental Health month and this exhibit hopes to reduce the stigma of mental illness. Over 100 local individuals (from ages 3-85) whose lives have been affected by mental illness submitted artwork for the exhibit. They were able to use art as a form of expression to engage the community at large.

Chair of the Anti-Stigma Hope Campaign, Marsharia “Shay” Holman, said, “Art is such a powerful way to express yourself.”

“The artists were so excited to have a forum of expression to be able to tell the community their story,” said Carrie Fesperman Redden of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria, who has also been involved in the planning and set up for the evening.

Explore Early American History in one of DC’s Original Neighborhoods

From Claire Mouledoux of Visit Alexandria:

ALEXANDRIA, VA – As one of Washington, DC’s original neighborhoods, only Alexandria offers an authentic experience of early American history in the setting of George Washington’s hometown. Unaffected by a Federal Government shutdown, Alexandria’s many attractions and more than 20 historic sites bring to life this country’s incredible past, from colonial times through the Civil War and beyond, in a charming walkable setting teeming with contemporary delights like boutique shopping, acclaimed dining, and vibrant nightlife.

Minutes from Washington, DC, Alexandria is easily accessible with four Metrorail stops. The Free King Street Trolley runs between the King Street Metro Station and Potomac River waterfront with frequent stops for hopping on and off to enjoy all that Old Town has to offer.
