Tails are Still Wagging from the 25th Annual Bark Ball

Thank you to everyone who supported the Washington Humane Society’s 25th Annual Bark Ball! With more than 750 guests and 350 of their four-legged friends at the Washington Hilton, this year’s silver anniversary event made history, raising over $500,000 (a new record) to benefit the critical programs and services of the Washington Humane Society (WHS). We can’t thank our generous community enough for going above and beyond to show how much DC loves DC animals for an incredible two and a half decades.

Go For The Gold, Adopt A Summer Olympicat

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) - The Summer Olympics are just over a month away, and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is getting into the spirit by hosting its very own Summer Olympicats Adoption Event.

It's also a celebration of June, the official Adopt a Shelter Cat month, with cats such as Bianca (pictured) ready and waiting for a forever home. The Summer Olympicats Adoption Event headlines this important time in the feline calendar, and runs throughout June, with adoption fees waived on all cats ages two and older.

If you're a prospective adopter, first-time cat owner, current cat owner, or an animal lover in general, you're invited to meet the world-class "cathletes" at the shelter. The AWLA staff is available to help adopters select the right winning cats for their homes.

Enter The Pet Photo Calendar Contest

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) - Cute pet calendars are everywhere, but here's a chance for your own adorable animal companion to be a standout star on a special 2013 calendar.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's annual Pet Photo Calendar Contest runs June 1-July 31, and is open to all pets, large, small, feline, canine, with feathers, fur or fins, from the smallest goldfish to the tallest dog (or pony). For the $25 entry fee, each entrant will receive a copy of the 2013 calendar.

Every pet entered will be pictured in the calendar, 10 pets will be voted as Pets of the Month, and the Grand Prize winner--with a professional pet portrait-- will be featured on the cover.

One Pet Foster Volunteer's Experience

One Pet Foster Volunteer's Experience

The Foster Experience
By Kirsten Stade, WHS Volunteer

My boyfriend Florian and I have been fostering dogs in the DC area since early 2008, first with several rescue groups and now with the Washington Humane Society (WHS).  These four years have contained their share of urine-stained furniture; shredded electronics, upholstery, and a passport; uprooted landscaping; and seemingly futile efforts at peacekeeping in a household with what some would say is too many critters under one roof. But above the sometimes deafening chaos, I have never questioned what I believe is a defining truth: fostering animals is the most important thing I can do in this lifetime.
