AWLA Celebrates Black Cat Appreciation Day Aug. 17

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -  Although legend has unkindly linked black cats to bad luck, true feline believers know the opposite is true, and celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day each year on August 17.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is observing Black Cat Appreciation Day this year with a special deal for adopters. The shelter will waive all adoption fees on adult black cats (1 year and older) on the 17th. Cats like the fabulous Freddy, pictured, are counting on finding their forever homes, and hope that potential adopters waiting for just the right moment will seize the advantage and bring home a sleek ebony feline.

Whether fluffy as bear cubs or shiny as patent leather, black cats are happy to keep secrets, both their own and yours. In today's social media savvy society, cat lovers reject the old myths about black cats and witchcraft, and embrace the happier reality: black cats rescued by AWLA and other shelters have already seen their own luck change, and they're anxious to bring some of it home to a deserving family.

Due to the extremely busy 'kitten season,' AWLA's shelter is currently full of cats of all hues, so both adopters and foster caregivers are urgently needed, to free up space for more needy animals arriving daily. If your home and your heart have room for a black cat (or two!), check out the candidates by clicking here to visit AWLA's website, and plan to bring him or her home to celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day.

With a coat in basic black that goes with everything, your new kitty friend will serve as a purring reminder that Black Cat Appreciation Day can be every day for those lucky enough to share their home with a black feline.
