Local singer-songwriter

ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA (WUSA9)--18 is a critical age in this country—you can vote, join the military and basically, take on more responsibilities as an adult.

When we started looking into being 18 in America, we searched the country for an 18 year-old singer-songwriter who could compose a song that reflected that special age. We found Alexandria, Virginia native Keira Moran.

When Keira wrote the song '18,' she polled her classmates at the University of Miami about what that pivotal age meant to them.

"I feel like I'm pretty much living the dream. I really enjoy my life," she said with a laugh.

Born in 1995, Keira came into a world where:

--'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio topped the Billboard charts.

--Braveheart was the most popular movie of the year

--the price of gas was just 1.35 a gallon

--and a first-class stamp was 32 cents.

Growing up, Keira's parents were –not- musical, but –she- has embraced performing since the age of 4.

"The energy you get from the audience is not something you can get from anything else. It's such a rush," said Keira.

She's already at work on her second CD.

"It's just incredible that something that you wrote, that was from your soul and from your heart, other people are enjoying and you can all kind of share in that relatable moment," she said. "It's just amazing."

Keira has been compared to music industry superstars like Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat. But she prefers to compose her own path… one she hopes will somehow, someday lead her to a duet with a musical legend.

"Elton John," she laughed. "Oh man, I really want to do that. That would be so cool!"

Keira is also a philanthropist, who donates a portion of the songs she sells online to a scholarship fund in her hometown of Alexandria. The recipient is a student who excels in academics and the performing arts. For more on Keira, check out her website, www.keiramoranmusic.com or check out her music on itunes.
