'Black Hat Bandit' gunman sentenced to 32 years in prison

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- A 65-year-old man who was part of the "Black Hat Bandits" gang the committed multiple armed robberies in the D.C. area was sentenced to approximately 32 years in prison.

The full length of Thomas George's sentence is 384 months, which was handed down Thursday after he pleaded guilty to two counts of using a firearm during the commission of armed bank robberies.

Court documents show that between January and March, George and his accomplices robbed nine banks in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. In every robbery, George displayed a firearm at bank customers or employees, prosecutors said. 

In total, George and his accomplices stole about $182,104 during their robberies. As part of his sentence, George was ordered to pay it all back.
