This is Not Your Average Spa: Parma Center for Health and Medicine

Most spas in the area are gearing up for Spa Week 2011, which runs from April 11th - April 17th. Parma Center for Health and Medicine will be participating in Spa Week, but they are more than just your average salon and spa. “We are a medical spa, and we do laser treatments and other services. Most spas are either medical or holistic, but we do both so we are unique,” said Luise Estelle, the Director and Administrator of Parma.

Parma opened up 4 years ago with the intention of being small and exquisite. “We wanted to be a medical B&B with meaning,” said owner and founder, Dr. S Nicky Singh. Singh continued on to say, “Well-being is physical, mental and spiritual. I believe in this with a passion. There is a need for people to look at themselves preventatively."

The ambiance of the spa is of the highest quality, with golf leaf imported from Venice, mirrors from Venice, French paintings and a candelier from Aspen. But what really sets Parma apart from other spas is the fact that they offer Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old natural haling system that originated in the ancient traditions of India. Western medicine tends to be reactive and focuses on eliminating systems; whereas Ayurveda focuses on the whole person to identify the emotion and physical sources of disease and then heal the source, not simply the symptoms.

Parma’s Dr. Thara studied Ayurveda for 8 years in Banglor. “Ayurveda is now the leading holistic medicine in the West,” said Thara. Dr. Prabhu also practices Ayurveda at Parma and has explained that there are three energies: vata, pitta, and kapha with 5 elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth). Patients who come to Parma are assessed and recommended treatments for their particular ailments by the two doctors. “I have clients from age 7 to age 84,” said Dr. Prabhu.

Today Dr. Prabhu gave a client the treatment Shirodhara, which is good for insomnia, headaches, anxiety and depression. During this treatment, herbal oil flows in a stream onto the person’s forehead. Watch the video to see this treatment being done.

Here is a Parma patient testimonial:

“I was given a massage as a birthday gift and found Dr Prabhu so knowledgeable that I returned for the Ayurvedic oil treatments in which he excels. I was planning hip replacement surgery, but now find that I am pain free on most days. His oil treatments, coupled with massage, and the advice of Dr Thara on herbal supplements and food choices, have made me a believer in alternative healing. And, my husband is a traditional doctor, so this was a leap of faith for me!”
