9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

A special remembrance ceremony will take place this Saturday, September 11 at 12:00 p.m. at the George Washington Masonic Temple at 101 Callahan Drive in Alexandria, VA. Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille, Police Chief Earl Cook, Fire Chief Adam Thiel, and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, along with the City of Alexandria’s public safety departments will co-host the memorial service to honor our nation’s first responders in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. There will be free parking on the grounds of the Temple and it will remain open to visitors during the service.

Congressman Jim Moran to Hold BRAC Mark Center Town Hall

One year before the Mark Center is scheduled to be occupied, stakeholders to discuss progress, problems


Washington, D.C.— On Thursday, September 16th, Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) will host a special community town hall to discuss the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 133 situation at the Mark Center site in Alexandria. The event comes one year out from the military’s stated date of implementing the major BRAC relocation.

Six thousand four hundred people are scheduled to start work in the new Mark Center facility on September 15, 2011. Congressman Moran has raised major concerns regarding the traffic problems that will be caused by this relocation.

Les Dames d'Escoffier to Host Dinner and Panel on Children's Eating Habits

Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international non-profit organization of women leaders in the food, beverage and hospitality industry that focus on education and philantrophy, is hosting a special dinner and panel discussion on children’s evolving eating habits.

Evening Star Café is partnering with Les Dames d’Escoffier for this event on Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. Evening Star Café is located at 2000 Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, VA.

The panel discussion will be about why there are these changes in children’s eating habits and what steps can be taken to help kids make healthier dining decisions. It will be led by Nancy Tringali Phio, author of My Two-Year-Old Eats Octopus: Raising Children Who Love to Eat Everything.

Come Have a Taste of Del Ray

Tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. come on out to the Del Ray Farmers Market lot in Alexandria, VA for the Taste of Del Ray! This event includes samplings from 15 different restaurants, and all of the proceeds will benefit Community Partners for Children.

The Del Ray Farmers Market lot is located at 2400 Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, VA. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.  

Yarn Tasting: Lace in Space

No, you don’t actually taste the yarn, but you can look through lots of different lace knitting and crochet patterns that are popular right now! Fibre Space is a full-service knit and crochet community that offers knit and crochet classes, holds parties and events, provides yarn, needles and notions. It was also recently voted “Best New Retail Shop” by the Washington City Paper Reader’s Poll. Come in this weekend and see the funky, bright shopping space for yourself at the Yarn Tasting.

Restaurant Week for Alexandria

As DC’s Restaurant Week comes to a close, Alexandria’s top restaurants are geared up for their very own 2010 Restaurant Week. Alexandria is home to a variety of “foodie” restaurants, including both formal dining and casual spots.

St. Elmo's Coffee Pub Offers Fun for Kids Too

On the 4th Monday of every month, St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub in Alexandria hosts “4th Mondays 4 Kids with Mr. Don.” Mr. Don is one of the most adored children’s entertainers in the business. His next musical performance at this local coffee shop is happening on Monday, August 23 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
