The City of Alexandria is keeping your health in mind by delaying its birthday celebration.

The Alexandria Birthday Celebration at Oronoco Bay Park will begin at 7:30 p.m. instead of the originally set time of 4 p.m.

Falls Church, Va. (WUSA) – The City of Falls Church would like to update its community with the following information.

  • The Community Center located at 223 Little Falls St., is open Wednesday until 7 p.m. as a Cooling Center. There is no WiFi, but there is plenty of AC, and power strips to charge cell phones.
  • The 911 system is back in service. Please call 911 for all police emergencies. Call 703-241-5053 for non-emergencies.
  • Fireworks will take place on Wednesday at George Mason High School located at 7124 Leesburg Pike at 9:20pm.
  • Call 703-248-5200 for the latest post-storm information.
  • Call 866-DOM-HELP for Dominion Power restoration times. The Info Line will be staffed today until 7 p.m.; otherwise, a recorded message has the latest updates.

FOTODC Looks For The Best Area Photographer

Calling all photographers. FotoDC is on the hunt for the most interesting work by Washington area photographers for the 2nd annual Uncover/Discover exhibition.

The panel of curators includes Elizabeth Krist, Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic; Jayme McLellan, Director of Civilian Art Projects and Ken Ashton, Artist and Museum Professional.

Curators will select work from emerging and established photographers who sent in their stuff for a chance to be featured in two exhibitions this fall. 

"It is our mission to discover and spotlight the work of Metro Area photographers,” said Theo Adamstein, Executive Director and Founder of FotoDC.

Occasionally Cake of Alexandria, Va. is celebrating their three-year anniversary on Sat., July 21 and handing out one free cupcake per person to all their patrons with no purchase necessary.

They will also donate 25 percent of all their sales that day to the Dunbar Alexandria-Olympic Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, as well as collect donations to be given to the organization. The Washington Humane Society (WHS) is proud to participate in Best in Shelter, the region's first virtual dog show, starting today! Real animals sponsored by four local animal groups are competing to win cash prizes. WHS has entered four adoptable dogs in the online competition, which will run from June 14-17 at www.BestinShelter.org, and we need your help to win!
 
The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite dog up to once per day. The dog with the most votes will earn $50,000 for his or her shelter! Dogs placing second and third will earn $25,000 and $15,000 for their shelters, respectively.

Local Gym Participates in World's Largest Swim Lesson

Over 24 countries and 46 states within the U.S. will be participating in the Guinness World Record of the World’s Largest Swim Lesson this week.

Want to join in all the fun? On Thursday, June 14, the Sport & Health Clubs in Gaithersburg, McLean and Brambleton, Va., will be hosting open swim lessons at 11 a.m., and anyone can attend.

This swim lesson is intended to prevent future accidents, practice water safety, and reinforce the fact that swimming lessons save lives.
