Local Elementary School Hosts Annual Festival of Lights

Local Elementary School Hosts Annual Festival of Lights

This morning the students of Burgundy Farm County Day School celebrated diversity through their annual Festival of Lights. This annual event is a way for students to celebrate different holiday traditions including songs from cultures from around the world. It is a way to help the students realize that they are a part of a larger community of people with differing faiths and celebrations during the winter holiday season.

The school gymnasium was decorated in a way to portray every culture and was packed with students, teachers, and parents for the program. I have to say my favorite was the Jingle Bell Rock dance that the youngest class, the junior kindergarteners, did at the elementary school. They were adorable!

Burgundy Farm County Day School is located at 3700 Burgundy Road in Alexandria, VA. It was the first racially integrated school in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1950, so the annual Festival of Lights is an important tradition for the school.

Riverbend Park Expands Programming Into Historic Properties

Riverbend Park Expands Programming Into Historic Properties

From Fairfax County Park Authority:

Located along the Potomac River upstream from Great Falls in the northwestern corner of Fairfax County, Riverbend Park has long been home to a rich variety of nature programs. Thousands of people visit the park each year to learn about local flora and fauna from the park’s staff of knowledgeable and enthusiastic naturalists. However, traveling to Great Falls for a program or class can sometimes be difficult; so many people haven’t experienced these high-quality programs. That’s about to change in the New Year.
