Virginia Architecture Week April 10-16

From AIA Northern VA Chapter:

Watch structures being built entirely from cans, participate in an in-depth tour of architecture in Alexandria, be inspired by a Pecha Kucha and view an exhibit of local award winning buildings. The American Institute of Architects Northern Virginia Chapter celebrates Architecture Week 2011 with several free public events.

Here’s the schedule:

April 8-16 - Canstruction® Build-Out and Display

April 8 Build-Out Night (5:00p-midnight), structures on display through April 16.

At Ballston Common Mall, 4238 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington.

A design competition featuring teams building fantastic structures entirely of canned food, which ultimately goes to a local food bank. Visit www.aianova.org/canstruction.php.


April 10 - Walking Tour of Historic Old Town Alexandria

1:00-3:00p, beginning at the Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street.

The tour covers the history of Alexandria as reflected through its architecture and urban design. Free, but requires pre-registration at reservations@aianova.org.


 April 12 - Pecha Kucha Night

6:00p doors, 7:00p presentations, at the Light Horse Restaurant, 715 King Street, Alexandria.

The event features 8 Pecha Kucha style presentations (20 images, 20 seconds each) on topics related to art, architecture and design. Free, attendees will be purchasing their own refreshments. Reservations not required.


April 14 - Award Winning Projects: An Exhibit and Lecture

At Virginia Tech’s Washington Alexandria Architecture Center, 1001 Prince Street, Alexandria.

The exhibit highlights award-winning projects by local architects and features a presentation by Geier Brown Renfrow Architects on their award winning Lab School Library. Free, registration not required.
