Old Town Whole Foods Holds Heart Healthy Lecture with Inova Hospital

From Kim Bryden of Whole Foods:

Last Thursday, Whole Foods in Old Town Alexandria held a free heart healthy lecture with Inova Hospital. There were 10 people in attendance, 7 adults and 3 kids. Sue Wolinsky, RN MPH at Inova Hospital spoke to the group about what is heart health, functions of the heart, and how to keep yourself on the right track in maintaining heart health. It was extremely informative and the crowd was excellent - a lot of really intriguing questions. Also a plus that it was held in our café because other customers could see and hear what was going on.

In the wake of health care reform, Inova hospital is doing more preventative health care measures such as teachings about nutrition and staying healthy. As one of our core values at Whole Foods Market, we have a healthy eating component to what we merchandise and sell at our stores. For example, Dr. Joel Fuhrman (Eat Right America) and Dr. Colin T. Campbell (The China Study) are two of our doctors who have helped Whole Foods Market develop our healthy eating values (i.e. plant based foods, healthy fats, nutrient dense, and "whole foods"). Since we are not doctors at Whole Foods, it's important to us that we bring in professionals that correlate with our core values to educate our customers about important healthy lifestyle decisions - what is hydrogenated fat and how is it effecting your arteries? Do you know that Whole Foods Market does not carry any products with hydrogenated fat? Really this partnership has formed out of a complete synchronization of goals in light of health care and the obesity epidemic.

The heart healthy foods we offered at the lecture were antioxidant trail mix (nuts, berries), pomegranate cranberry juice, black bean/mango/tomato/pineapple salad and we gave them a pack of daily multi-vitamins. We offer so many healthy options, and ways on how to cook healthier. It can all be found here: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/healthstartshere/

In March we are having 3 supper clubs Thursday evenings at 7pm. We will be doing a cooking demonstration and then the participants will eat the food. We will be talking about making healthier decisions, how to shop for healthier products, and how to cook healthier meals (making your plate a rainbow of colors!). Attached is the poster for our supper clubs. It's free you just need to register by e-mailing me, Kimberly.bryden@wholefoods.com. We are also going to be having Value Tours, how to shop at Whole Foods on a budget with our healthy eating specialist, Carrie Moon. That's Wednesday nights March 9 and 23 at 7pm. Our next Inova lecture will be March 29 at 7pm - Beating Cancer with a Fork! with Dietitian Deb Rowland.
