Chile Becomes Export Powerhouse, You Can Enjoy More Gourmet Chilean Tastes Locally

Chile is currently participating in the Fancy Food Show at the Washington D.C. Convention Center for the second time in 20 years. The Fancy Food Show kicked off on Sunday, July 10, and will be finishing up Tuesday evening, July 12.

In the last few years, Chile has become a food production and export powerhouse, coming in at number 16 among exporting nations in the world.  Chile currently holds 21 free trade agreements with 58 different countries, including North America. Chilean food and beverages are imported right here in Arlington and other parts of NoVA, including restaurants such as Vapianos, Eventide, and Circa, and grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Giant, and Safeway.

“Just to realize that we are a world-class food producer, that is really exciting,” said Chef Pilar Rodriguez, one of Chile’s most renowned chefs.

When Rodriguez thinks about what Chilean cuisine has to offer, the first thing that comes to mind is diversity.  She explained that because there are so many different topographies in the three different regions (North, Central, and South), an endless amount of different foods and flavors are available.

Some of the most prevalent Chilean products you will find locally are olive oil, seafood, and dulce de leche. Several Northern Virginia wine and spirit stores carry Chilean Wine, including Unwined Online, Total Wine & More, and WineStyles.

“This year the best thing that we have (at this year’s show) is olive oil. We are starting a new brand for the olive oil industry that is 100% original virgin oil. It is a really good quality and a little higher price,” said Felix de Vicente, the Director of Chile’s Trade Commission (ProChile).

Chilean Ambassador Arturo Fermandois also attended the show on Sunday. For more information about ProChile, Chilean food and products, or Chile’s participation in this year’s Fancy Food Show, visit http://www.prochile.cl/fancyfood2011/.
