CITY OF MANASSAS: RECYCLE, REUSE AND WIN A T-SHIRT

CITY OF MANASSAS: RECYCLE, REUSE AND WIN A T-SHIRT

The City of Manassas Public Works and Utilities department is serious about recycling and investing in a healthy environment. In the past, recycling rates in the City of Manassas were at 45 percent, and they’re hoping to increase that number in 2012 and 2013. Those residents that participate in the city’s Recycle Right Program by properly sorting and recycling throughout April will receive a T-shirt; one shirt per household. The City of Manassas also offers tips on what to recycle and when. For more information, go to www.manassascity.org or call 703-257-8219.

For Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey of SCW Interiors in Alexandria, VA, www.scwinteriors.com, being included as one of the designers in the 2012 DC Design House is “the most prestigious invitation for a designer.” But it also means sprinting to the finish line. “Being selected to design for the showhouse is a bit like being crowned homecoming queen then having to run a marathon in your ball gown while collecting items for a scavenger hunt,” Cavin-Winfrey says. It’s also one of the highlights of one’s career, she notes.

Showhouse veteran Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Interior Design in Bethesda, MD, www.kelleyinteriordesign.com, who has participated in 21 showhouses over the past 11 years, says it’s still exciting to be selected. “I really feel honored to be a part of this fundraising event,” Proxmire says. “Children’s National Medical Center is a very deserving organization and should hopefully receive much needed funds from the DC Design House.”

Family & Youth Casting Call: Getting Kids Outside, Active, and Hooked on Fishing!

Family & Youth Casting Call: Getting Kids Outside, Active, and Hooked on Fishing!

The following information was sent to us by Mike Bailey:

The Family & Youth Casting Call (FYCC) is a fun family and youth fishing event at Fletcher's Cove on the C&O Canal in Washington DC. The 2012 event is scheduled for Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21.

What better way to get kids “hooked” on nature than by teaching them how to fish?  This April, local and national fishing and conservation organizations will once again host the Family & Youth Casting Call to help “set the hook” for children to learn about nature and fishing in the Washington, DC area. A wiggling fish on the end of a taut line can be one of the most tangible connections between having fun outside and learning about conserving our natural resources.
