Inmate Charged After Damaging Cinder Block in Holding Cell in Apparent Attempt to Escape

Loudoun County, VA:  An Alexandria man being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center has been charged after causing damage in his holding cell in an apparent attempt to escape.

 

On Friday, September 23, 2011, members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Corrections staff discovered that Yonathan Melaku, 23, had damaged a small portion of a cinder block wall in his holding cell. The Adult Detention Center is constructed of the highest maximum security construction standards and the public was never in any danger. The Adult Detention Center was placed on lockdown only as a precaution.

 

After reviewing the incident with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Melaku was charged with damaging the facility to aid escape and possession of an instrument to aid escape.

 

The incident remains under investigation.
