Don't Miss Out On The Biggest Chinese New Year Festival in the Area

Tonight is Chinese New Year's Eve. Tomorrow marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit on the lunar calendar. The Asian Community Service Center is proud to present the 4th Annual Chinese New Year Festival on Saturday, February 12th. The Festival will take place all day long, from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, VA. The middle school is located at 3020 Gallows Road. 

The entire school will be filled with Chinese New Year decorations, booths, games, dancing, food, and more. The auditorium, the cafeteria, the gymnasium, and even the hallways will be filled with different cultural activities and decor. Admission is FREE and you will get the chance to try great asian food, watch live performances, see the traditional Chinese New Year Parade, draw prizes, and gain Asian cultural exposure. 

Greater Springfield Chamber Hosts Book Drive to Benefit Area Children

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Community Affairs Committee will host a Children’s Book Drive February 2 through April 21.  Children’s books, for readers up to grade 5, will be collected at Chamber events and at area businesses for distribution to local elementary age students this spring.

“Every child should have books they call their own,” reminds Karen Brown, coordinator of the Chamber’s Book Drive.  “I know our business community is ready to help.”

New and gently-used children’s books may be dropped off at participating locations through April 21.  Chamber volunteers will pick-up collected books as donation boxes fill and prepare them for distribution to young residents in the Greater Springfield community.  Book Drive hosts include:

Center for Alexandria's Children Oscar Night Benefit

The Center for Alexandria’s Children (CAC) announces production is underway for its 2011 gala benefit, Oscar Night in Alexandria.  The event will raise funds for the CAC, a public-private partnership dedicated to the elimination of child abuse.   The CAC helps protect children and strengthen families by coordinating the investigation, prosecution, treatment and prevention of child abuse in one safe, child-friendly facility.

The benefit will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m at the Belle Haven Country Club. Belle Haven is located at 6023 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria, VA.

Volunteers Needed for Phoenix Rising Meal Program

The following was sent to us by Susan Huffaker:

Franconia United Methodist Church, 6037 Franconia Rd, Alexandria, is part of a group of churches that serves a nutritious bagged meal to homeless people living in the woods, their vehicles, and in motels along the Route One corridor between North Kings Highway and the Fairfax County Parkway in Alexandria.  All ages can help prepare and assemble the bag lunches and assist in delivery.  We deliver the meals the fourth Friday of the month at 5:30 pm, and we prepare the meals on the day before (Thursdays) at 6:30 pm.

Ivan Update

Ivan Update

He stole our hearts when he was stolen from the New York Avenue shelter in November. Since being returned to us, Ivan has been in a loving WHS foster home. His foster parents have taught him great manners and they say he is an amazing dog who will make a great addition to any family.
