Yesterday’s Earthquake Doesn’t Hinder Progress of the Exterior Home Makeover at Virginia Volunteer Gary Gaal’s Alexandria Residence

Week two is complete of the Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. - Ply Gem Extreme Exterior Makeover of retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Gary Gaal's Alexandria, Virginia home. Despite rumblings from the 5.8 earthquake registered in the area yesterday, the Case and Ply Gem teams are moving rapidly with the Gaal home’s total exterior transformation which includes new windows, siding, stone veneer, roofing, garage doors, entry door and weatherization materials for a more energy efficient, low maintenance residence.

After searching for a deserving Washington, DC Metro area citizen who has had little time for home improvement due to the level of his or her community outreach, Case found Gary Gaal after contacting the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) of Virginia who sent out a request to the Fairfax County Police and Fire Departments for nominees. As an auxiliary police officer at the Franconia Police Department in Fairfax County, Virginia, Gaal has been a valuable asset to the police department, encouraging others to volunteer and also training officers in the weapon systems. According to Paul Cuzzolino, second lieutenant of the Franconia Police Department, Gary’s military experience has enabled him to understand what it means to give back to the community.

“The military opens one’s eyes to many types of suffering and people of other nations, cultures, etc. in crisis,” Cuzzolino says. “Gary brings this to the community and police department by obtaining a spiritual gain from his aid and the understanding that we as a police agency not forget why we serve. Gary also participates with other police departments providing support for officers killed in the line of duty.” Cuzzolino says Gaal has volunteered more than 2,500 hours in a single year.

Gaal always wanted to be in the military and after receiving a scholarship to the University of Missouri’s ROTC program, Gary completed his education and selected Infantry as his branch of service and Europe as his destination. Gaal was in Germany in 1974 at the end of the Vietnam War and was faced with tremendous command and leadership challenges. This led him to excel in his volunteer roles at the police and fire departments and as part of a ski patrol. He has logged nearly 19,000 hours in volunteer service over the last 15-plus years. He was recently awarded the Lee District Community Champion Award for his efforts.

Now as a civilian working as the Chief of the Exercise Branch for the office of the Army Operations Center at the Pentagaon, Gaal continues to plan, organize and execute strategic exercises to look at worst-case scenarios in the event of crisis situations and evaluate how to manage them. He was at the Pentagon on 9/11 and was ordered to activate the Army Crisis Action Team (CAT) to evaluate the situation. With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, Gaal continues to dedicate himself to his country and community.

Gaal is always encouraging others to volunteer and is quick to share his stories as a volunteer, offering guidance on how to get involved. Now Gaal is also offering a look into his home renovation that he and his wife Luise are ecstatic about receiving. With week two of the Gaal Home’s Extreme Exterior Makeover complete, the Gaals are especially excited about the installation of the new R5 Series windows from Ply Gem that offer thermal performance five times better than his home’s old divided light windows. The new windows eliminate the maintenance of wood and also provide sound deafening qualities that are three times better than the old windows. Week three is well underway; look for a full report with new photos next week.
