National Trust for Historic Preservation Names Alexandria a 2011 Distinctive Destination

On February 15 on Market Square, the City of Alexandria announced that the National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Alexandria to the list of 2011 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. The city earned this prestigious designation for its "urban charm that blends an extraordinary early American past with modern flair and its citizens’ strong commitment to protecting and celebrating their history."

According to www.preservationnation.org, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destination program has been recognizing cities and towns since 2000 that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization. In each community, residents have joined together and taken action to protect their town’s character.
