“Eeeeexcellent.”

Harry Shearer, the actor who voices such beloved Simpsons characters as Montgomery Burns, Ned Flanders, and Otto Mann will be offering a master class Saturday March 12 at the Gala Theater as part of this year's DC Independent Film Festival. Besides lending his vocal chords to half of Springfield, Shearer has a body of work that spans four decades including the cult comedy classic This Is Spinal Tap.

Following the master class, Shearer will screen his documentary The Big Uneasy. In the film, Shearer gets the real story of Hurricane Katrina right from the people who lived through it, revealing an account not heard in the popular media.

These are just two of the many events at the DCIFF. All this week, there will be screenings of short and feature films from around the world. And on Saturday and Sunday, there will be seminars for filmmakers on a variety of topics from legal advice to production techniques. I attended a pair of seminars on film financing and story pitching this past weekend at the Letelier Theater in Georgetown. Both provided a wealth of information and provided a great opportunity to hang out with fellow filmmakers from all over the country.

For its closing night on Sunday March 13, the DCIFF will have a special presentation of the Sundance cut of The Blair Witch Project at Regal Gallery Place in Chinatown. This version is not the one seen in theaters, but the one that got the movie sold and launched an independent film phenomenon. Co-creator and Montgomery County Community College alum, Ed Sanchez, will be in attendance and will take part in a Q&A following the screening.

So go out and take advantage of this annual festival and give your support to events like this in our Nation's Capital. For screening schedule and tickets (including The Big Uneasy and The Blair Witch Project) go here, and here for seminar tickets (including Harry Shearer's master class).
