Gallery West is proud to present “Poetry of Light,” a collection of Classical Realist pastel works by artist Rachel Estrada. Located at 1213 King Street in Old Town Alexandria’s Boutique District, the show will run from July 6 – July 31, 2011. There will be two receptions, both open to the public and including refreshments. The artist's reception is July 9th from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. A closing reception will be held on July 30th from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Estrada began her love affair with the pastel medium while she was in high school. As a child she often visited the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where she admired and was influenced by the Old Masters.

Estrada chooses to work in the pastel medium mainly for its pure intense pigments and manipulative nature, which allows her to work layer upon layer, blending each soft stroke into another to create texture, form, and fluidity. Portraits, rustic garden scenes, and still lives are her most familiar subjects.

Starting many of her pastels from photographs taken the moment inspiration strikes, Estrada sometimes prearranges compositions in her mind, using a camera to capture the idea and then combining subject and soul through the interpretation of pastel.

Working in the Classical Realist tradition, Estrada’s award-winning pastels have been exhibited in local and national shows and can be found in collections all over the world. Estrada is a member of the Portrait Society of America and she shares her enthusiasm for pastel by teaching beginning pastel to students of all ages.
