(Alexandria, VA) Tory Cowles, winner of the 2011 Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Artist of the Year competition, formally presented her series of paintings entitled “Living LARGE!” on July 14th at the Target Gallery. All came together with the collective desire to view these grand and vibrant works that, as juror and National Gallery of Art Curator, Harry Cooper noted, convey a pure love for painting.

Along with Tory Cowles’ exhibition, we have two special events planned, an Art Panel and Kids Art Activity. This additional programming will allow the art-loving public to examine why art moves us and for our youth to paint their own abstractions inspired by Cowles’ artwork.

The Art Panel on July 28 from 6-8pm will discuss the question “Why does art move you?” With the seminar being lead by the artist herself, Cowles wants to share her cathartic reactions to her own art-making, and is eager to hear your thoughts on why art, whether it is visual, musical, or theatrical, resonates with you on a profound level. Artists, musicians, writers, dancers, or simply art-lovers, are all welcome to come and offer their insight on this thought-provoking inquiry.

Next, Target Gallery will be hosting a Kids Art Activity on July 30 from 11am-1pm. Children will render their own abstractions influenced by Cowles’ work. Our hope is that after the kids take in Cowles’ imagery, they will experience the same thrill from the act of painting that Cowles’ encounters and has portrayed in her own bold canvases.

Join us July 28, 6-8pm for the Art Panel: “Why does art move you?” and July 30, 11am-1pm for the Kids Art Activity!
