Target Gallery Opens 2012 with Fears & Phobias Exhibition

From the Torpedo Factory:

Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery presents Fears & Phobias from January 12 through February 19, 2012. The exhibition explores a variety of fears and phobias and the artists’ unique approach to depicting these themes.  A reception to meet the artists and the juror will be on January 12, 6-8pm with a juror talk at 7pm.

Our juror, Lia Newman selected 22 works by 21 artists from across the country out of a pool of close to 500 images, a daunting task.  She states in her juror remarks: “As art making has long been understood as a method towards healing it was not surprising that nearly five hundred works of art were submitted for an exhibition entitled Fears & Phobias. The works of art in a variety of media including painting, photography, textiles, sculpture, printmaking, and video, addressed an array of topics that for the artists are sources of alarm, anxiety, or terror. Fears and phobias are not always rational; the threats may not be real. But for the person in distress, the fear can be debilitating all the same. Therefore, as the juror for this exhibition I was careful not to judge the fear depicted when selecting the final works for exhibition.”

The artists in the exhibition include John Talbott Allen (KY), Casey Callender (OH), Laurel Garcia Colvin (NY), April Dauscha (VA), Andrea Eis (MI), Lodiza LePore (VT), Mario Marzan (NC), Mike McAteer (NC), Iain Muirhead (IL), Sarah Petruziello (NJ), Ann Piper (PA), Gabriella Sarraf (MD), Jeremy Schilling (RI), Mimi Hart Silver (GA), Astrid Smith (CA), Michelle Steen (CA), Jennifer Takahashi (NJ), Ayumi Tanaka (CA), Constance Thalken (GA), Suzanne Vigil (VA), and Heather F. Wetzel (OH).
