Schools to Participate in Annual Del Ray Festival this Weekend

From Alexandria City Public Schools:

John Adams Elementary School students will perform in concert and George Washington Middle School Campus students will lead an art project at Art on the Avenue, the annual Del Ray festival taking place this Saturday, Oct. 1, along Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria.

The John Adams Orff Ensemble will perform on the Children's Stage from 12:50 to 1:20 p.m. The group will play pieces composed by Carl Orff as well as African and American folk music. The students use percussion instruments that have pitch, such as the xylophone, and percussion that has no pitch, such as drums.

George Washington will host a sand-painting project at Nicholas A. Colasanto Park, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., at the intersection of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth avenues across from SunTrust Bank. Festival goers are invited to help draw designs on the pavement for a 12-foot diameter sand painting, to be completed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Participants also can help sweep away the work at 6:30 p.m. This project is inspired by traditional, culturally diverse works, including Navajo sand paintings, Tibetan Buddhist sand Mandalas and sand paintings of India, called Rangoli.
