Workshops Teach Gardening Basics at Green Spring Gardens

From Fairfax County Park Authority:

The season for growing summer gardens may have ended, but the season for growing as a gardener is just beginning. Gardeners who find it difficult to hang up their trowel and gloves are invited to enroll in two Basic Gardening workshops offered at Green Spring Gardens in October. The one-hour workshops, taught by volunteers from the Master Gardeners program, cover incorporating vines into garden designs and creating unique gifts with garden materials.

Vine Gardening

On Friday, October 7, 2011, discover the wonderful world of vertical gardening.  Learn how to add height and structure to gardens with the addition of vines.  Whether a small yard or a large lot, vines add year-round interest to the landscape.

Gifts from the Gardener

Garden materials such as flowers, herbs, bulbs and vegetables make unique gifts for the holidays, parties, and special occasions.  On Friday, October 21, learn about drying flowers and herbs, forcing bulbs, making relish, chutney and potpourri, among other techniques.

Workshops run from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and the fee is $10 per person. Participants may register online for the workshops at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/gsgp/ed-adult.htm.

Green Spring Gardens established a Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardener volunteer training program in 2001. Trained in environmental horticulture, Master Gardeners provide gardening expertise to the community.

Green Spring Gardens is located at 4603 Green Spring Road in Alexandria, Va.
