“The Giving Circle of Alexandria” answers First Lady’s Call

The following was sent to us by The Giving Circle of Alexandria:

Alexandria, VA, Tuesday, November 09, 2010  The Giving Circle is holding a free informative forum addressing the issue of childhood obesity, with guest speaker Debra Kibbe, Director of Physical Activity & Nutrition at the International Life Science Institute. Childhood obesity is on the rise nationwide; this is not just an inner-city problem, suburban communities are severely affected.  The nationwide obesity crisis has even captured the attention of the White House and First Lady.

Michelle Obama’s “Lets Move” campaign, the obesity statistics from INOVA and the Northern Virginia Healthy Kids Coalition have inspired this forum.  INOVA’s statistics stated that 40% of Alexandria children are or are at risk of being overweight, as well as 25% of children in Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church and Loudon.  “This is an issue that all communities should address at the local level, there are things we can do as citizens to make a difference,” said Tracy Nickelsburg of The Giving Circle.

This evening will be an opportunity to hear “A Recipe for Community Action” from Debra Kibbe and visit local experts from Alexandria Dept. of Recreation, ACPS Food and Nutrition Services, DC Central Kitchen, Nourish Schools, Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria, Healthy Bites, Smarter Tables, WIC and more.

This event is open to the public and will take place November 9th at Atrium, Madison Building of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, 600 Dulaney Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, 6:30 cocktail reception & meet local experts, 7:30 Debra Kibbe speaks, “A recipe for community action.” RSVP to rsvp@givingfullcircle.org, list names of all attendees.
