Cupcake Craze Has Only Just Begun

Alexandria Cupcake opened its little red door back in January of this year, but got so busy right away that they didn't hold their Grand Opening Celebration until this past Saturday, October 9. Co-owners Adnan Hamidi and Kathy Taylor held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the boutique bakery on King Street in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Patrons who came in between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. were able to enjoy free cupcakes.

Fans of Alexandria Cupcake prefer this shop over other local bakeries because of the high quality ingredients: Alexandria Cupcake uses Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla, European sweet cream butter, premium chocolate, organic eggs, and fresh fruit from the local farmers market. I had the chance to try the Red Velvet cupcake…which I devoured for breakfast this morning (probably not the breakfast of champions, but it was sure worth it). It was light and fluffy and the cream-cheese frosting was pretty mouth-watering!

Alexandria Cupcake has already established a presence in the special events category doing weddings, private parties, and birthdays. Also, every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. until closing, Alexandria Cupcake hosts a regular “Cupcake Happy Hour” so customers can come in for these sweet treats for $1 off of the regular price!

It is clear that the cupcake phenomenon has only just begun. With so many different cupcake boutiques popping up in Washington D.C., and now in Northern Virginia, I'm curious…what is your favorite shop?
