The Art League’s Suzanne Bethel Receives “Superstar” Award from ACVA

On Friday, December 10 at the historic Athenaeum in Old Town Alexandria, members of the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association (ACVA) gathered for the Tourism Marketing Forum and Holiday Social. The main purpose of the event was to announce the 2010 ACVA “Superstars” – five individuals in the ACVA business community who have done an outstanding job throughout the year working with the ACVA.

Suzanne Bethel, Deputy Director of The Art League was presented with a Superstar award for her spectacular job spearheading and organizing The Art League’s Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser and educational events at the Alexandria Festival for the Arts in September. The Art League’s partnership with ACVA created the Alexandria Art Experience, a new “local village” at the Alexandria Festival of the Arts. The Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser drew a huge crowd and was an enormous success. Bethel was able to organize the staff, artists, and volunteers in a very short time period, and on the Saturday of the Festival The Art League raised over $7,000 through the sale of handmade ceramic bowls. ACKC Cocoa Bar in Del Ray generously donated the ice cream for the event.

Art League instructor and award-winning artist Steve Prince led the educational component of the event by conducting a hands-on portrait activity for kids, and Mayor Bill Euille joined in by having his silhouette drawn by Prince. The completed drawing was presented to Euille this morning at the Athenaeum.
