Alexandria Dodges Flood

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) - Heavy rains throughout the night and morning sent the Potomac River splashing over it's banks in Old Town Alexandria.

Where King Street meets the river, a barricade floated in the flooded block. A women who had left her car here, walked barefoot through the six inches to get to it and move it.

The city made sand bags available for the taking... while most of them just sat untouched on a flat bed truck, a few takers came to get their share.

High tide at 1:16 the rain stopped and the wind picked up. It whistled through the stays on the bare sail boat masts at Belle Haven Marina, which was empty except for Jim Griffin who came to secure his boat.

The strong current drove a huge log straight toward another boat... and the water smothered a few piers. Park Rangers stood by watching the river. They had sandbags ready to protect the comfort station, aka bathrooms.

Throughout the day, people watched and waited for a bigger storm that never came.
