BASIS Independent McLean Earns First Place at  34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Com

For the first time in almost 30 years, the 34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition awarded first place to a new math champion: BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) of McLean, Va., which opened in 2016. BIM’s middle school math team placed first among schools in the Northern Virginia Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition (comprised of 17 schools). Longfellow Middle School of Falls Church, Va., who has historically earned the first place award since the 1980s, came in second place. Vienna Student Learns Hands-On Teaching at BASIS Independent;Tysons Chamber Job Shadow Program

Angie Soler, a senior at James Madison High School of Vienna, Va., got hands-on teaching skills when job shadowing BASIS Independent McLean’s kindergarten teacher, Danielle Sarver. Soler is part of the 5th Annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program, which includes 50 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, James Madison, Marshall Academy and George C. Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va. Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is heading up the program as she is the chair of the TRCC’s Youth and Education Committee. Metropolitan School Of The Arts Student, James Woods, To Head To Catholic University For Music Educa

James Woods, 18, of Alexandria, Va., and senior at Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria Va. was selected by The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to study music education, in the fall of 2017. Not only is he finishing up his high school studies at MSA, Woods worked as the music director for Aldersgate Community Children’s Theater (ACCT) with Elf Jr. and is also employed by the Educational Theatre Company of Arlington, Va. BASIS Independent McLean Elects Its New Mascot by Student-Designed Election Process

BASIS Independent McLean started its inaugural year this fall in McLean, Va., Tysons Corner’s first k-12 school, and quickly went to work on the election process to vote in their first school mascot, the BASIS Independent McLean Bobcats. The student-designed electoral process, led by BASIS Independent McLean ninth grader, Rohit Narayanan, mimicked a voting system similar to the United States, and provided a learning tool for students to understand the electoral process during the recent presidential election.
