ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Proctor says today was the first step in holding 27-year old Kashif Bashir accountable.

Bashir appeared in court for a lengthy 3 1/2 hour preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors described what happened the day Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was shot in the head. They described what happened just around the corner from the courthouse at a boutique interior design store that set off the horrible chain of events on South St. Asaph Street.

Prosecutors brought detectives, investigators, a forensic expert and a teacher to the stand.

A witness had her Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy 1st graders on the playground. She described how she yelled for them to 'run' inside when she heard the gunshot and saw Officer Laboy crumble to the ground.

FBI probes Ashley Judd tape at McConnell's request

WASHINGTON (USA TODAY) -- The FBI said Tuesday it is investigating whether Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's Louisville campaign office was bugged after aides were caught on tape discussing possible political attacks on Ashley Judd.

The tape was posted by Mother Jones, a liberal magazine that created a stir last year when it published a secretly taped video of Mitt Romney.

"We can confirm that Sen. McConnell's office reported this matter to us and we are looking into it," said Paul Bresson, an FBI spokesman. "We are reviewing the tape to determine if any federal laws were violated."

On the recording, McConnell's aides discuss Judd and her struggles with depression and views on several topics, including religion. The actress-activist, who flirted with a Senate bid in Kentucky, said in late March that she would not run for the Democratic nomination in 2014 to take on McConnell.

Eva Longoria: I'm a 'Texican'

(USA TODAY) -- Eva Longoria, looking stunning in a blue dress, was the star of the Latina Power panel at the Women in the World Summit in New York on Friday. She had the audience laughing as she talked about being a "Texican."

Longoria says her family has been in the U.S. for nine generations. "We never crossed the border, the border crossed us," she said as the audience erupted in laughter and applause. It wasn't until she left Texas that she realized "Wait! I am the Mexican?"

Longoria recalls getting on the school bus as a child and pulling out her tortilla while the kids around her were eating Pop Tarts.

She says she didn't grow up speaking Spanish, but learned it later in life out of necessity.

"We are the only country in the world that promotes monolingualism. Why not speak Spanish, French, Chinese?" Longoria says. "The xenophobia is that there is going to be a Taco Bell in every corner."
